Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) week is just around the corner (20 – 26 August 2018) but you still have time to register a team to get involved. This year the theme is ‘SOS – Save Our Seas’, with the focus being on marine litter and cleaning up Australia’s beautiful waterways.
Marine litter consists of a wide range of materials, including plastic, metal, wood, rubber, glass and paper. However, not surprisingly it is plastic that dominates – accounting for approximately 80% of the items found on our beaches. This year’s KAB week is encouraging people to take part in a water way clean up, and they have a competition in place to get you inspired!
How you can become involved:
1. Register a team to take part in the ‘Keep Our Waterways Beautiful’ competition. Your team can made up anyway you like – be it family/friends, a community group, a business or if you prefer to work alone you can register as an individual.
2. Complete the clean up between 20 – 26 August. The area can be a location you choose such as a beach, lake, river or creek (anywhere that leads to a waterway). Be sure to take a few ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures.
3. Post your ‘before and after’ pictures on Facebook or Instagram (@KeepAustraliaBeautiful) along with a short sentence of 25 words or less that explains why you believe it’s important to keep our oceans clean. Remember to use the #KABWeek hashtag!
